Manchester City throws Chelsea out of the League Cup

The English champions Manchester City won the top game in the League Cup against Chelsea and reached the round of 16. With national player Ilkay Gündogan and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega in the starting line-up, team manager Pep Guardiola’s team won 2-0 (0-0).

Riyad Mahrez (53′) and Julian Alvarez (58′) made the decision with a double strike, while Kai Havertz came on as a substitute at Chelsea after 75 minutes.

Defending champions FC Liverpool narrowly escaped embarrassment in a duel against third division side Derby County. The team of team manager Jürgen Klopp, who rotated vigorously and gave the 18-year-old German Melkamu Frauendorf his starting XI debut, only prevailed 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out. It was 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Premier League leaders Arsenal suffered a setback and were eliminated from the competition early on. The Londoners lost 1: 3 (1: 1) against their league rivals Brighton & Hove Albion. Eddie Nketiah (20′) gave the hosts the lead, former Arsenal pro Danny Welbeck (27’/penalty), Kaoru Mitoma (58′) and Tariq Lamptey (71′) turned the game around.

For Tottenham Hotspur, the journey in the League Cup is already over. At promoted Nottingham Forest, the team of team manager Antonio Conte lost 0: 2 (0: 0). After the Premier League defeat against Liverpool (1: 2) last weekend, it was the second bankruptcy in a row.
