Premier League tests return to standing room

In the Premier League, a return to standing room in football stadiums is looming. Interested clubs can apply until October 6th for a corresponding pilot project, which is to be launched at the beginning of 2022 and is initially limited to six months.

In response to the Hillsborough disaster, in which 97 Liverpool FC supporters were killed in a mass panic, all standing room in the arenas was banned in 1994.

“We want to work with fans and clubs and ensure safe standing room,” said British Sports Minister Nigel Huddlestone. The Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA) will accompany the project and evaluate it openly.

The plan was welcomed in the fan scene. “This could mean that our campaign for safe standing in the stadiums could come to an end after more than 30 years. It is a long tradition that fans can choose between sitting and standing. The atmosphere will also improve,” said an official statement the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA).
