At Manchester United, the 7-0 defeat in the Premier League duel with hosts Liverpool is far from over. Before the Europa League round of 16 against Betis Sevilla on Thursday, top striker Marcus Rashford and also star goalkeeper David de Gea emphasized their determination to make amends in addition to their shameful disappointment.
Rashford felt like he was in a bad dream when he was presented by Jurgen Klopp’s team. “I would like to play the game again right away. I wish we could go out and put things straight,” wrote the 25-year-old on his Twitter channel and looked ahead again: “We’re not allowed to play this game let our good season be defined. The result is what it is, we can’t ignore it, but we have to trust in our processes and stick together.”
For ManUnited, the bankruptcy means the highest defeat in its first division history. In the table, the Red Devils, who only celebrated their first title after a six-year dry spell by winning the League Cup at the end of February, are still on course for the Champions League in third place. Erik ten Hag’s team had previously gone eleven matches in a row unbeaten in all competitions.
Goalkeeper de Gea also wants to put the embarrassment behind him as quickly as possible. “Results like this shouldn’t happen, especially on a path like ours. But we have a commitment to the club and a responsibility to its crest and we still have plenty of opportunities to look ahead,” said the Spain keeper.
His defender Luke Shaw, however, first vented his anger at the humiliating defeat: “We didn’t show any personality or mentality. As a big team we should have played better.”
