SV Elversberg missed out on promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga on the 36th matchday of the 3rd division. The third division promoted could not realize the march from the regional league to league two with a 1: 2 (0: 0) at SC Freiburg II on Saturday. Lars Kehl (58th, penalty kick / 68th) scored twice for the Breisgauer. Manuel Feil (81st) only managed the connecting goal.
With 70 points, the Saarlanders are still the leaders of the standings, three points ahead of the second team from Freiburg, who are not allowed to move up.
The lead over second division relegated Dynamo Dresden, who won 1-0 (1-0) at FSV Zwickau and is third, is only four points. With the same number of points as Dresden, SV Wehen Wiesbaden follows in fourth place after beating SC Verl 2-1 (1-1). Fifth is five points behind 1. FC Saarbrücken, who defeated Hallesche FC 2-0 (1-0).
Only RB Leipzig, Würzburger Kickers and Jahn Regensburg had previously managed to progress from the fourth-tier regional league to the second Bundesliga. “Every now and then you have a thought of what will happen if. But that’s just a brief thought,” emphasized SVE trainer Horst Steffen before the match in Freiburg. Recently, the SVE went through a small form slump with only one win from the past six games, benefiting from their large cushion for the winter break.
Niklas Hauptmann (35th) scored for Dresden to make it 1-0 in Zwickau, which had to be relegated. Kianz Froese (14th) and Ivan Prtajin (62nd) scored the goals for Wiesbaden, Barne Pernot (45th) scored to make it 1-1 for Verl. Richard Neudecker (44′) and Marvin Cuni (87′) were responsible for FCS’ 1-0 draw against HFC.
Viktoria Köln scored 4: 1 (1: 1) at SpVgg Bayreuth, so the Franconians also have to relegate. Waldhof Mannheim surprisingly lost to VfB Oldenburg 1:3 (0:2). Lower Saxony grabbed the last straw in the relegation battle.
FC Ingolstadt had already secured relegation on Friday. The second division relegated won against MSV Duisburg 2-0 (1-0).
