Bundesliga referee Patrick Ittrich described the cancellation of the third division game between FSV Zwickau and Rot-Weiss Essen as completely correct. “Incredible how we are treated referees. There is no alternative to stopping the game,” wrote Ittrich on Twitter. He wished his colleague Nicolas Winter (Hagenbach), who had been spilled a beer in the face when going into the dressing room at half-time, all the best.
“Hopefully this fan will be punished with full force. Don’t you think what that does to a person?!” Ittrich continued. Many respondents called his reaction exaggerated, which made the top referee even more angry: “The way aggression against people, verbal and physical violence is played down here, is disgusting!”
Winter stayed in the dressing room at half-time and the game was stopped when the score was 1-1. Shortly before the break he had given a red card to a player from Zwickau and awarded a penalty against FSV.
According to information from the Neue Presse, the man who poured the beer on Winter was a sponsor of the club. Zwickau announced legal action. The German Football Association (DFB) will take care of the game rating and possible sanctions.
