Brett PatelFIFA has fined Italian first division soccer club Spezia Calcio for violating transfers and registering players under the age of 18.
The world association announced that Spezia Calcio had violated Article 19 of the FIFA regulations. The association bypassed the article in question and the national immigration law and thus brought several minors from Nigeria to Italy.
Spezia Calcio will not be allowed to register new players during the next four transfer periods set by the Italian Football Association. The club also has to pay a fine of 500,000 Swiss francs. The protection of minors is a key element of the rules, said FIFA.
Spezia Calcio was surprised by the decision, as the association said in a message. The punishment is far too severe and the intention is to take legal action. The irregularities mentioned by FIFA occurred under the previous administration of the club.
