Maria KeaneDiego Costa at Mainz 05? What sounds pretty utopian at first glance was apparently offered to the Bundesliga club in the past transfer window.
So reports the imagethat an advisor offered a Mainz scout a WhatsApp message with the prospect of a video call with the former Chelsea and Atletico striker, who has been without a club since his contract was terminated at Atletico Mineiro in early January and would therefore have been free of charge. Costa is demanding around four million euros net for a year and a half, the message said.
However, Mainz apparently did not respond to the offer at all and sporting director Christian Heidel listened to the request image the first time of it. “But I wouldn’t have taken the so-called offer seriously either, we get that kind of thing more often,” Heidel said image quoted. “These are mostly people who have nothing directly to do with the player in question. Only when you show interest do they try to get active through the actual agent or the player.”
A commitment by Costas would have been unrealistic anyway, Heidel explained: “He was under discussion at Barcelona and Arsenal, of course only Mainz is missing,” he explained with a wink. “Apart from the fact that the 4 million net would not have fitted our salary structure.”
In his career so far, Costa has won two English titles with Chelsea and two Spanish titles with Atletico Madrid. A few years ago he was one of the best strikers in the world. Most recently, the 33-year-old was active for Atletico Mineiro from August 2021 to January 2022 and won the league and cup double with the club in Brazil.
