RB Leipzig - 1. FC Köln 3: 1: Nkunku dream goal paves victory against harmless billy goats

Three goals scored and unstoppable: Led by the outstanding Karim Onisiwo, FSV Mainz 05 ended their negative run. After six Bundesliga games without a win, Mainz beat VfL Bochum 5-2.

When the final whistle sounded after his last furious sprint, Karim Onisiwo put his arms on his hips with a satisfied smile. Then the exhausted match winner grabbed the ball and accepted the congratulations of his teammates: In the 5: 2 (3: 0) of FSV Mainz 05 against VfL Bochum, which had been frighteningly weak for a long time, Onisiwo had made the difference and with a three-pack almost single-handedly for that End of the negative run in Mainz.

Onisiwo was “outstanding”, said Mainz sports director Martin Schmidt sky: “He led the way and took everyone else with him. He couldn’t be tamed.”

Captain Silvan Widmer, who made it 2-0 (17th), called Onisiwo’s performance “fantastic”. The hat-trick (28’/57’/87′) was “incredibly lively” – and Widmer almost felt sorry for Bochum’s defenders: “If you have to defend against Karim in top form, you can expect an uncomfortable afternoon.”

Onisiwo’s gala came at the perfect time, since Bochum had sensed the chance to take Mainz down to the bottom of the table. But after the first win after the last six Bundesliga games without three points, the Rheinhessen extended their lead over the danger zone to seven points.

Mainz uses the first chance to lead

Jae-Sung Lee (1st) scored ahead of Onisiwo and Widmer. Former 05er Pierre Kunde Malong (70th) and Erhan Masovic (72nd) were successful for the Bochum team coached by Thomas Letsch. However, they could not avoid the ninth defeat in the tenth away game.

The clear bankruptcy was “simply annoying”, scolded striker Philipp Hofmann. They “simply threw away the first half” and made numerous lack of concentration on the defensive.

That’s another reason why the “intense and close” game that Mainz coach Bo Svensson had expected didn’t develop – on the contrary: Less than a minute was played when Lee used the first shot on goal from close range to take the lead.

Bochum briefly draws hope

Mainz, who last won against 1. FC Köln (5-0) in October, continued to push, the raid-like attacks didn’t give Bochum any time to breathe. When VfL got into the game a little better, Widmer raised. Onisiwo provided the preparatory work, who benefited from a blatant mistake by Bochum’s Danilo Soares in the third goal.

Letsch was by no means satisfied, he brought on four fresh players in the second half. However, this did not change anything in the course of the game. Mainz kept control and could rely on Onisiwo. After strong preliminary work from Barreiro, the Austrian raised.

Bochum only scored in the final phase and drew some hope. But again Onisiwo had the right answer.

FSV Mainz 05 – VfL Bochum: The voices of the game

Bo Svensson (FSV Mainz 05 coach): “After the blow to the neck on Wednesday we showed a great mentality. We started very concentrated and got into the game well. After we had to replace Stefan Bell, we ran into problems. Bochum always believed in themselves. It could have been tight again , that was unnecessary. Overall, the team played a very good game.”

Thomas Letsch (coach VfL Bochum): “Unfortunately, we didn’t take the game. We were always close, but not fast enough. We never found our way into the game. The second half wasn’t much better, we came back out of nowhere. It wasn’t enough, Mainz deserved to win. That doesn’t throw us off our feet.”
