VfL Wolfsburg has missed its second win in a row. The Wolves were only lucky to draw 1-1 at FC Augsburg, who were in strong form.
Enrico Maassen and Niko Kovac had already made peace again at the final whistle. A quick hug, everything okay. The coaches of FC Augsburg and VfL Wolfsburg somehow had to live with the 1: 1 (1: 0) – Kovac and the wolves could certainly do it a little better given the course of the game.

In the heated encounter – pack formation included – the ambitious guests, who wanted the second win in a row, took the lead through Yannick Gerhardt (27th). Robert Gumny (55th) gave the hosts a more than deserved draw after three previous wins.
“We didn’t defend well once, but the team never stopped believing that we could take something with us. If we act like that, we’ll get the necessary points,” Reuter said. Wolfsburg were initially under a lot of pressure, but after 20 minutes they temporarily took control of the game, which almost went haywire just before the break. Augsburg then successfully pushed for the equalizer and had the best of many chances (66th) through Iago to win four games in a row for the first time in eight years.
Augsburg had to do without Rafal Gikiewicz – the goalkeeper injured his thigh in the win against Schalke and did not recover in time. Tomas Koubek was in goal for him for the first time since June 2020. His best scene came in the 49th minute when he thwarted the 0:2. “Tomas saved us the point in one situation or another,” praised Reuter.
Koubek’s opponent Koen Casteels was initially very busy against powerful Augsburgers and prevented the deficit with an incredible reflex against Ermedin Demirovic (13th). The wolves had trouble defending themselves against the attacks in this phase, but then came into play visibly better.
The visitors took the lead, however, surprisingly: after Jakub Kaminski had won the ball and Demirovic stumbled, Ridle Baku had all the time in the world to make a sharp pass inside from the right, and Gerhardt just had to hold off his foot.
After that, the game got heated. Referee Daniel Siebert (Berlin) gave a total of eleven yellow cards.
Augsburg started the second half as determined as the first and literally forced the equalizer. Wolfsburg could hardly get out of their own half and were lucky that the hosts missed the best chances.
Bitter for FCA: Maximilian Bauer and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw each received their fifth yellow card and will miss the next game at 1. FC Köln.
