FC Bayern Munich has prematurely extended the contract with young goalkeeper Lukas Schneller until 2024. This was announced by the record champions on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old, who has been playing for the club for almost ten years, actually started the current season as the first-choice goalkeeper for the second team, but was injured for large stretches of the season so far.
Nevertheless, those responsible rely on Schneller. “Lukas is a very ambitious young keeper, unfortunately he was unlucky enough to be injured this season. But we are very satisfied with his development as a goalkeeper and believe that he can take the next steps with us,” said Jochen Sauer, manager of the Bayern campus.
Schneller is well respected at the club for his ambition and was also part of the squad for last year’s Club World Cup. In the internal ranking, Schneller has loud image-Zeitung almost open to Christian Früchtl (21). Früchtl, who is under contract with Bayern until 2023, was loaned to 1. FC Nürnberg last season but did not play a single competitive game there.
Before the new season, Früchtl broke his collarbone while on vacation and was out for a long time. However, after his recovery, he quickly moved up to the professional squad and replaced Sven Ulreich, who was also injured, as number two behind Manuel Neuer (35).
Neuer successor: duel between Früchtl and Schneller?
There is currently a lot of movement at Bayern for exactly this position behind Neuer. Alexander Nübel (25), who was actually brought in as Neuer’s crown prince and who is on loan to AS Monaco up to and including the coming season, should not have any realistic chances of playing with the record champions afterwards, should Neuer – as recently reported – extend his contract until 2025. A farewell to Nübel is therefore conceivable.
At least in the short term, the signs point to a contract extension for Ulreich as number two for the coming season. In the medium term, Schneller and Früchtl could not only be about the role of Neuer’s deputy, but possibly also about his successor.
