Football coach Niko Kovac (51) praises the new sports director of his ex-club Bayern Munich in the highest tones. “A fantastic young man, a very down-to-earth man, a very intelligent man and, above all, a very competent one,” said the VfL Wolfsburg coach in one go sky-Interview on Friday about Christoph Freund (46).
“I’m sure and convinced that FC Bayern made the best choice there,” said Kovac, he predicts: “It can only go in one direction, namely back up.”
Kovac knows Freund from their time together at Red Bull Salzburg. Between 2009 and 2012, Kovac worked as a youth coach and as an assistant coach for the professionals for the Austrian series champion.
Freund will leave Salzburg on September 1st and then start working for the German record champions. There he will succeed Hasan Salihamidzic, who was sacked after the last matchday of last season.
