FC Bayern - Demichelis on FCB departure: "The chemistry with van Gaal just wasn't right"

Martin Demichelis spent a total of seven and a half years at FC Bayern Munich. The Argentine would have liked to stay longer with Munich, but the difficult relationship with ex-coach Louis van Gaal ended the FCB chapter of the now 40-year-old prematurely.

“As a player, I was sometimes too open with my emotions. The chemistry between van Gaal and me just wasn’t right, I also felt that he was being treated unfairly,” Demichelis recalls in an interview with the kicker.

In the summer of 2010, van Gaal approached the then defense star and told him that he should look for a new club. “In his second year he came to me and said: ‘Micho, you have to leave the club, you are a national player, but you will not play here'”, said Demichelis.

The Argentine refused the coach’s request, also because there was probably no longer enough time for a transfer to another club. “That was a week before the transfer ended, so it was impossible to find a new club. So I stayed,” said Bayern II’s current coach.

A few months later, van Gaal approached Demichelis again and repeated his recommendation to change. But then regular central defender Holger Badstuber was injured, which washed the Argentine back into the starting line-up. “He needed me, I scored my last goal for Bayern against Freiburg,” said the 51-time national player.

Demichelis pleads with Bayern bosses: “Please let me go”

A long-term stay under van Gaal was out of the question. The Bayern bosses Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß advertised in vain for Demichelis to stay, who refused to extend his contract. “I hope you have a great season but please let me go,” the center-back let her know. Ultimately, Rummenigge and Hoeneß agreed to sell.

Demichelis then moved to Malaga FC, where he experienced his second career spring. After further positions at Manchester City and Espanyol Barcelona, the Argentine ended his career in 2017.
