Marcelino García coached Bayern newcomer João Cancelo at FC Valencia in 2017/18 and is still enthusiastic about his former protégé. “I am sure that João will triumph at Bayern,” he said picture.
At that time, Cancelo was “still very young and therefore a bit unstable at times”. “He still had room for improvement defensively, but he’s improved a lot since then.”
On the other hand, there are many strengths: “He combines great technical qualities and a strong physique. Thanks to this combination and his good decision-making in most game situations, he can easily outplay individual opponents, but also entire defensive lines. What also stands out is his precision in the game last third, on the last pass. He can cross very precisely with both feet. This overall package was outstanding when we were in Valencia.” He is best off as a right-back.
According to Garcia, Cancelo has “a good heart”, which is also related to a bereavement in his past. In 2013 he lost his mother in a car accident, and João experienced the accident together with his brother. “He was going through a very difficult time as a family. This situation, which made him suffer a lot, affected his whole being. Although we were only together in Valencia for a short time, I have a lot of respect for him,” continued Garcia.
Cancelo joined FC Bayern on loan on Deadline Day, with FCB having a purchase option at the end of the season. At his presentation, the Portuguese explained that the Manchester City chapter does not necessarily have to be over for him.
