FC Bayern – FCB legend Helmer on Müller: "What did Kovac or Löw actually do wrong?"

Bayern legend Thomas Helmer raved about FCB star Thomas Müller and said he had “incredible” qualities. He has no explanation for the fact that this only partially played its role with some coaches.

“What did Niko Kovac or maybe Jogi Löw actually do wrong?” Helmer puzzled in an interview Focus Online and the Evening News. “Müller may grumble a lot, sometimes annoys one or the other teammate, but on the field he also tells the youngsters where to go. You can learn that over the years, but he just has it in him.”

Under ex-Bayern coach Kovac, Müller only found himself on the bench in autumn 2019 and toyed with the idea of leaving the club. “If there is a need, he will definitely get his minutes,” said Kovac at the time, before he was released a little later after a defeat against Frankfurt. Müller recently made it clear that “in the winter of 2019/20 there was a change for me”.

In the national team, Müller was sorted out together with Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng in spring 2019 in order to initiate a change after the World Cup embarrassment in the previous year. However, he was brought back together with Hummels for the European Championships last summer and completed his 110th international match in the knockout round against England.

“He’s unbelievable where he is on the pitch. You can’t classify him, that makes it so difficult for the opposing teams,” enthused Helmer. Müller needs “this freedom, and if he gets it, he pays it back. Or now the template against Cologne, how he puts the ball back: Others break their hips or tear a muscle fiber with such an action – at least I do.”
