FC Bayern Munich has temporarily taken the lead in the Bundesliga. Coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team won 6-2 (3-1) against FSV Mainz 05. Union Berlin can overtake again on Sunday with a win.

The goals for Bayern were scored by Serge Gnabry (5th), Jamal Musiala (28th), Sadio Mané (43rd), Leon Goretzka (58th), Mathys Tel (79th) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (86th). Silvan Widmer (45th + 4th) and Marcus Ingvartsen (82nd) scored for Mainz.
Before the kick-off, “Ultra Munich” could be read across the entire south curve, which changed to “Schickeria” a little later. The FC Bayern fan group is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

FC Bayern Munich – 1. FSV Mainz 05: The analysis

Nagelsmann relied on the same eleven as in the 3-0 win in Barcelona, Mazraoui again got the lead over Pavard. Mainz, who had previously won three times in a row, played in a 3-3-2-2 formation, which changed to a very defensive 5-3-2 when the opponents had possession.

This enabled Bayern to combine well into half of the guests without much pressure. The Munich team gave the zero fives hardly any room to breathe – almost 71 percent possession of the ball in the first 15 minutes – and took the lead through Gnabry (5th). So it was only a matter of time before Bayern made it 2-0 (28′).

As a result, Mainz dared a little more and just missed the connection after two goals from aluminum (32′), before there were penalties on both sides: Mané converted for Bayern (43′) in the follow-up shot, Ulreich held against Burkhardt (45 .+3.). In the following corner, however, the Neuer representative had to admit defeat (45th + 4th).

After the change of sides, FCB took full control again and missed the best chances until Goretzka quickly used the fourth top-class player to make a preliminary decision (58th). Because both coaches changed a lot, the game got wilder again in the final phase. Substitute Tel (79′) and Choupo-Moting increased (86′) for Bayern, Ingvartsen scored Mainz’s second consolation goal.

The central defender in the Mainz back three had big problems with the pace of the Bayern attackers (Mané, Gnabry, Musiala). In the first half, he won just three of his nine tackles and recorded an underground passing rate of 29 percent. Also to blame for the penalty that led to 3-0.

The referee: Benjamin Cortus

Not an easy afternoon for the referee. Made two correct decisions in the 18th minute when he failed to point to the point. Also correct to decide on a penalty after viewing the TV images when fouling Mané. The scene before the second penalty could not be clearly resolved. Was also wrong with the yellow card to Fernandes (34th).
