FC Bayern Munich – Arminia Bielefeld 1-0: Sanes Kracher saves work victory

Leon Goretzka and Co. found it surprisingly difficult against Arminia Bielefeld.

FC Bayern Munich has maintained its lead in the Bundesliga. On matchday 13, Julian Nagelsmann’s team won 1-0 (0-0) against Arminia Bielefeld.

Leroy Sane (71.) scored the goal of the evening in front of almost 12,000 spectators in the Allianz Arena.

This means that FC Bayern’s lead (31 points) over their pursuers Borussia Dortmund is one point. The next Saturday at 6.30 p.m. there will be a direct encounter in Signal Iduna Park.

Sane’s goal was FC Bayern’s 102nd Bundesliga goal in the 2021 calendar year – a record. The previous record holder 1. FC Köln scored a total of 101 goals in 1977.

Nagelsmann’s team has scored an average of 2.68 hits per game in the 38 Bundesliga games so far since January 3, 2021. Against Bielefeld, however, the record champions missed numerous good shot opportunities because Arminia keeper Stefan Ortega had a strong day.

“The first was not possible, the second was not possible. Perhaps there was also a lack of conviction. The point is then to keep going,” said Thomas Müller Sky.

FC Bayern – Arminia Bielefeld: The analysis

Nagelsmann bet on almost the same team that he had sent into the race in the 2-1 win during the week in the Champions League against Dynamo Kiev. Only Upamecano returned to the team after being suspended for Nianzou, who was suffering from a shoulder injury. With Kimmich, Choupo-Moting (both COVID-19) and Sabitzer (calf injury) three other players were missing from the record champions.

But that did not affect the flow of the game in Munich. The Nagelsmann-Elf came into play after a good quarter of an hour against extremely deeply graduated Bielefelds and worked out some decent opportunities with many good runs and passes in depth.

The wide awake Ortega fended off the shots at his goal, however, the home side lacked the ultimate consistency and precision. The score on goal at the break was 7-0 anyway. It only seemed a matter of time before Bayern took the lead. But in the second half, the hosts almost exclusively bet on flanks, of the speed and variety in the last third was much less to be seen than in the first section – up to the 71st minute, when the substitute Musiala and Müller made the game fast in the center and Sane brought into firing position.

With the placed and powerful shot of the national player, Ortega could not do anything. As a result, the Munich team pressed on more goals, but failed again and again at the Bielefeld goalkeeper. The bottom line was that it was a close but deserved job win for FCB due to the many chances.

FC Bayern – Arminia Bielefeld: The data of the game

  • At Bayern there were five French in the starting line-up. Only Hansa Rostock had more foreign players from one nation in the history of the Bundesliga in the 2002/03 season: six Swedes.
  • Thomas Müller played his 396th Bundesliga game against Arminia, drawing level with Franz Beckenbauer. The Bavarian veteran needs eight more missions to get to fifth place, which was occupied by Klaus Augenthalter.
  • Bielefeld won only one of its 19 Bundesliga guest appearances at FC Bayern (3U 15N) – 4-0 in March 1979. In a 3: 3 guest appearance in the previous season in February 2021, DSC scored points for the first time since 1985 at Munich.

The star of the game: Leroy Sane (FC Bayern)

Strongest and most conspicuous Bayern player – not just because of his goal. Did a lot of leg work, tried again and again and rewarded himself for his great effort.

The flop of the game: Leon Goretzka (FC Bayern)

A staid appearance by the national player. Didn’t manage to put his boss stamp on the midfield, his actions lacked the spark in the front. The logical consequence: Nagelsmann changed Goretzka shortly after the break.

The referee: Marco Fritz

A confident leader in a fair encounter. Without exception, I was right in all of the decisions.
