FC Bayern Munich - Coman convinces France as a right-back: "Said that I can"

Bayern Munich’s winger Kingsley Coman impressed the French national team in the 8-0 win over Kazakhstan in an unusual role as a right-back. A position that he could take on in the future at the German record champions?

Coman had apparently recommended himself for the role in the back right with coach Didier Deschamps. “I told him that I can,” said Coman in an interview with the TV broadcaster Telefoot: “At the club I developed a little in the same position with Ball.”

For the first time it “worked out pretty well,” the 25-year-old continued. “Defensively, I’m not the strongest, for an offensive player I defend as well as I can. What is certain is that this is not my best position.”

Overall, however, the response was extremely positive. In addition to team-mate Jules Kounde, who asserted that he “felt very comfortable” next to Coman, the French press also praised the Bayern player’s performance.

“A decision that was worth it,” judged Francetv and also the L’Equipe can well imagine further appearances as a right defender. Coman “revolutionized the position. He’s a hyper-creative player.”

So far, another Bayern player, Benjamin Pavard, had occupied the French right-back, but recently there have been reports that several France stars would doubt Pavard’s abilities.

That could now also become an issue in the club. Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann last put Coman on the left as a counterpart to Alphonso Davies in a similar role. In addition, Pavard presented himself in the past as extremely vulnerable to injury. Also in this season he missed a few games at the beginning due to an ankle injury, in some of the past games both Niklas Süle and Josip Stanisic were given preference, although Pavard would have been ready for action.
