In his own opinion, Robert Lewandowski outdid himself in 2021 and reacted emotionally to the next broken Müller record.
“I’m very proud of the whole year. For me it was again a higher level. It was a turbulent year, with a lot of emotions,” said the Bayern Munich striker after his 43rd Bundesliga goal in the calendar year.
With his goal to make it 4-0 (1-0) against VfL Wolfsburg in the 87th minute, the Pole beat “Bomber” Gerd Müller’s record from 1972. Like the recently deceased Bayern legend, Lewandowski scored the new record in only 34 races.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann was “extremely happy” about the “very nice goal”, which was also “extremely difficult” to score. “You have to do it like that first, with his weaker foot in quotation marks,” he said.
For Lewandowski (33), who had previously plowed in vain and had left several chances, Christmas was saved. “Now I enjoy spending time with family and friends,” he said and said: “We can go into the new year with a good feeling.”
