FC Bayern – Thomas Müller on the Müller-always-plays debate: "It has an absoluteness that doesn't count in football"

After the win against VfB Stuttgart, Thomas Müller distanced himself from the renewed “Müller always plays” debate.

“It’s been following me and FC Bayern since Louis van Gaal. That’s 13 or 14 years ago. Of course it was like that back then. But the squad wasn’t that wide either. That it’s always played…” said Müller after the game against Stuttgart am sky-Microphone.

The striker wants to focus much more on his individual achievements and thus recommend himself for the starting XI. “It’s about us performing. I try to perform and when the coach feels I’m doing the team good, he throws me in. He just wants to win. That’s good for me and it feels good too,” the 33-year-old continued. The “Müller always plays” topic has an “absoluteness that doesn’t count in football.”

Former Bayern coach Louis van Gaal once said, when asked about the importance of the striker for FC Bayern, “Thomas Müller always plays”. FCB coach Julian Nagelsmann took up the Dutchman’s statement after the VfB game and gave Müller a good chance of playing in the CL game against Paris Saint-Germain.

In the current season, Müller contributed 16 goals in 25 competitive games. In the last six consecutive games alone, the striker has been directly involved in six meetings. He also scored his 300th scoring point against Stuttgart.
