RB Leipzig - 1. FC Köln 3: 1: Nkunku dream goal paves victory against harmless billy goats

Countered, caught up and still lost: returnees Schalke 04 are already deep in the relegation battle after their second home defeat.

Simon Terodde could not be reassured at all. After the final whistle, the Schalke 04 goalscorer rushed furiously towards the Augsburg keeper Rafal Gikiewicz, both of them wrestled with each other in the goal net and yelled at each other. Gikiewicz was constantly insulted by the Schalke fan block, Terodde probably accused him of provocation.

“Maybe I overreacted a little,” Terodde explained DAZN. “I’m very emotional and when you lose a game like that it hurts a lot. It’s about defending your colors. He should take the three points and go to Augsburg.”

It was the ugly end of an exciting Bundesliga game. A game that Schalke lost 2:3 (1:2) at home – despite catching up, despite being outnumbered. In the trend-setting duel with the Bayern conquerors FCA, the Royal Blues remained guilty of their Bundesliga suitability for long stretches. They conceded two defeats in a row for the first time since their resurgence.

“We are very disappointed,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. “We were fully into the game, had one man more, there was the feeling: now it’s tipping over!” But then Augsburg struck again.

While Schalke is only a point away from a relegation zone, the Augsburgers celebrated four wins in the first eight games for the first time in the club’s history. “The fans always play a role here at Schalke,” said Ermedin Demirovic, who scored twice DAZN: “That’s why I’m very happy.”

Schalke – Augsburg: Demirovic with an early double strike

Demirovic (10th and 21st) first scored for the guests, who coldly used their counterattack chances. Terodde (33rd) shortened for the Gelsenkirchen team, who repeatedly acted rather unimaginatively with long balls to their double lead of Terodde and Sebastian Polter. After the equalizer by Tom Krauss (63′) and the yellow-red card for Mergim Berisha (71′), Andre Hahn (77′) gave Schalke the knockout blow in his 250th Bundesliga game.

Polter and Terodde were still trying to bond with the game when the visitors took the lead: Demirovic was completely free after a poorly defended Hahn cross and flicked the ball into the goal. It became dangerous for the first time on the other side when Dominick Drexler threw the ball over the goal after a long shot by goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow (15′).

An exemplary counterattack via Hahn and Berisha broke the Schalke defense again – Demirovic scored again unchallenged. The Royal Blues, on the other hand, initially made it easy for the Augsburgers to defend: long crosses that were probably intended for Terodde and Polter ended up nowhere.

Only a stroke of genius from Terodde brought the goal. After a one-two with Drexler, the second division record scorer lobbed the ball into the net. Shortly after the break, central defender Sepp van den Berg had to be carried off with an apparently serious foot injury (52′). According to Schröder, a break is feared.

Nevertheless, the significantly improved hosts managed to equalize through Krauss. But it countered Augsburg – outnumbered.

Schalke 04 – FC Augsburg: The voices

Frank Kramer (Schalke 04 coach): “Of course we’re disappointed. We fought our way back into the game, invested a lot of energy, that was great. Augsburg was very effective. If we had a majority, we should have made more of it because the lads were too restless. We would have earned more than leaving the field as a loser.”

Enrico Maassen (FC Augsburg coach): “I’m very happy that we were able to win the game. It was clear that it would be an explosive duel, very emotional. We played resolutely, had depth in our game, but that was gone after 30 minutes. After the two bitter ones Despite setbacks with the 2:2 and the yellow-red card, we remained stable. Then we got another chance and took it and therefore deserved to win.”
