Hertha BSC: Coach Tayfun Korkut fired

Hertha BSC parted ways with trainer Tayfun Korkut on Sunday in order to set one last point of irritation in the fight for relegation. Sports director Fredi Bobic is under pressure when looking for a successor.

Ten competitive games without a win, five league bankruptcies in a row, a direct relegation zone: Hertha BSC pulled the ripcord one day after the 0: 2 (0: 1) at Borussia Mönchengladbach and separated from coach Tayfun Korkut. In addition to Korkut, his assistant Ilija Aracic was released from his duties with immediate effect on Sunday and will no longer be part of the coaching team.

“There are still eight games left to get the necessary points for staying up. We will do everything we can to do this and with this decision we want to help everyone involved to be even more sensitive to the situation,” said Sporting Director Fredi Bobic on Sunday Step: “We rely on the positive effects of a new beginning.”

How exactly that will look like, Bobic left open. The club will inform about the Korkut successor “as soon as this personnel issue has been finally clarified”.

Korkut: “Unfortunately we couldn’t keep the good start of our work”

It is currently still completely unclear who will take on the Bundesliga rescue project at the capital club and prepare the team for the landmark home game against TSG Hoffenheim next Saturday (3:30 p.m.).

Korkut’s 15-week tenure, meanwhile, ends in a big misunderstanding. The 47-year-old, who took over from Pal Dardai at the end of November, left Hertha on Sunday after just 104 days in office with a miserable point average of 0.69 and just two wins from 13 league games. The Berliners are as table 17. for the first time since the third matchday on a direct relegation zone.

When Bobic crossed the barrier to the Hertha office at 10:14 a.m. on Sunday morning, Korkut’s fate had long been sealed. At the latest after the sobering defeat on Saturday in Mönchengladbach, the coach no longer had any arguments for continued employment.

After a promising start with seven points from the first four games, the Old Lady remained without a win in all games in 2022 under his direction. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep up the good start of our work,” Korkut is quoted as saying in the club’s announcement.

Korkut: Clear mistake by Bobic

Korkut himself had already cleared the way for the next new start as a coach on Saturday evening. “I know that no one is above the club,” he said after the 2-0 defeat. Striker Davie Selke spoke of an “absolute shitty situation” and Bobic announced talks with CFO Ingo Schiller and President Werner Gegenbauer.

The Korkut personnel, as Bobic knows, is also a clear mistake on his part. He unexpectedly pulled Korkut out of a hat at the end of November. Now Bobic had to admit and correct his mistake.

In the coming weeks, the Hertha sports director and the change he initiated last summer will also be put to the test. Although Bobic generated transfer income and saved salaries, which was necessary despite the many millions of investors. But after the almost catastrophe in the previous year, things went downhill from a sporting point of view.

The change of coach from Dardai to Korkut brought even more uncertainty and even less profit. If they were relegated, Bobic would also be badly damaged in office after just one season.

“At the end of the season there will be a turning point,” said the former Eingracht Frankfurt manager sports1 said. His next shot has to be right.
