Maria KeaneHungary’s President Victor Orbán paid a surprise visit to Union Berlin. He met compatriot and FCU professional András Schäfer. A corresponding photo of both circulates on social media.
Orbán used his multi-day visit to Germany to visit the Bundesliga leaders. Hungary’s President had previously met Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) in Berlin.
The association had only learned of Orbán’s visit a few hours earlier and spoke in a statement about a private meeting between the head of state and Schäfer.
“It was a private visit by Viktor Orbán as part of his stay in Germany. He briefly met Hungarian international András Schäfer in the main stand,” said Union communications chief Christian Arbeit.
Within the European Union, Orbán is repeatedly criticized for his nationalist policies. Accordingly, his appearance also made waves on social media.
“Another example that illustrates why a right-wing milieu feels so comfortable with this dear cult club,” wrote author Anne Rabe on Twitter, for example: “No, not all Union fans are right-wing!!! But the problem has been growing for a few years massively downplayed because this club has such a heartbreaking success story from the East.”
