Maria KeaneAfter Schalke 04’s away defeat at Hertha BSC, physical altercations broke out in the guest block on Sunday. According to the Berlin police, some people were injured and investigations into the incidents have already been started by the authorities.
“A colleague fell, was then seriously injured by kicks to the head and was then admitted to the hospital,” the police wrote in their statement.
Ruhr24 quotes an eyewitness as saying that the situation escalated after around 20 police officers entered the block. Pepper spray was used, other fans were pushed down the stairs. Video material is now to be evaluated for the investigation.
According to Schalke 04, which slipped to the last place in the table after a 2-1 defeat, “no further conclusions can be drawn from the picture of the situation”.
The Bundesliga club condemns “together with fans and members in principle and regardless of the person, any kind of violence”, this is also “clearly and immovably laid down in the jointly adopted mission statement”, it said in the message from Monday.
