Even under Domenico Tedesco, it remains a difficult season for RB Leipzig. At the end of the year there is a disappointment against Arminia Bielefeld.

In the first defeat in the third league game under the new coach Domenico Tedesco, Leipzig acted without ideas and powerless. The Bielefeld team, for whom Janni Serra (57th) and Masaya Okugawa (75th) scored the goals, earned the unexpected victory with passion and effectiveness. Even the red card for Fabian Klos (70th) after an overly hard boarding did not disturb the guests.

The rain fell incessantly, the opponents cheered, and the professionals from RB Leipzig fled into the dressing room – after three league games under Domenico Tedesco everything is as dreary as before for the runner-up. Against the table penultimate Arminia Bielefeld it was 0: 2 (0: 0), the disappointing first half of the season came to a fitting end for Leipzig. And the targeted race to catch up in the second half of the season looks more questionable than ever.

“We should have won this game, in our situation it is of course extremely disappointing,” said RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi after the first defeat under coach Tedesco: “In the winter break we have to clear our heads and then see that we can get another one Show your face. “

Leipzig acted without ideas and powerless, the Bielefeld, for whom Janni Serra (57th) and Masaya Okugawa (75th) scored the goals, earned the unexpected victory with passion and effectiveness.

“We were disciplined for 95 minutes,” said Serra. “Leipzig had more possession, but we were just there as a team.” Even the red card for Fabian Klos (70th) after an overly hard boarding did not disturb the guests.

RB Leipzig: Tedesco changed his starting XI

Tedesco had switched his starting eleven to two positions: Nordi Mukiele and Dominik Szoboszlai were allowed to play for Mohamed Simakan and the injured Konrad Laimer (ankle) from the start. After only seven minutes, however, Emil Forsberg was injured without any opposing influence. The American Tyler Adams came for the Swede.

In the Bielefeld team, two top performers were canceled at short notice due to the corona: regular goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and captain Manuel Prietl had to go into quarantine after positive tests. Despite these setbacks, Arminia kept up very well, the guests were able to keep the strong Leipzig players away from their goal for a long time.

The Leipziger clearly had problems with the variable and aggressive pressing of the opponent. The home side could hardly initiate anything dangerous from their many possession of the ball. Even with the standards, the impact was initially lacking. Shortly before the half-time whistle, RB was also lucky that the Okugawa goal master Patrick Wimmer was minimally offside.

RB managing director Oliver Mintzlaff, who had described the home game against Bielefeld as “an absolute must” before kick-off, should have been dissatisfied with the weak first half.

After changing sides, the picture was roughly the same: Leipzig often had the ball – but only rarely had ideas to crack Arminia’s defensive network. The Bielefeld counted on the counterattack and so came to the opening goal. RB responded with angry but ill-considered attacks. The dismissal of Klos didn’t change anything, the 2-0 draw by Okugawa was the penalty.

RB Leipzig – Arminia Bielefeld: The coach voices

Domenico Tedesco (trainer RB Leipzig): “We are of course disappointed. We didn’t have the number of scoring chances we had in Augsburg. In the last third we were way too sloppy. To be honest, I had no imagination, even if we had played another hour that we could even begin to play Shoot a goal.”

Frank Kramer (trainer Arminia Bielefeld): “We are incredibly happy that we took the three points. It was an energetic effort from the whole team, everyone was there for the other. We also coped with the two short-term failures. We defended well and compactly, the guys were always there . And we were more effective today than usual during the season. “
