Xabi Alonso is the most promising candidate at Bayer Leverkusen to succeed the heavily criticized head coach Gerardo Seoane. That reports ESPN. Alonso worked for three years as a reserve coach at La Real, before that he earned his first spurs as a youth coach at Spanish record champions Real Madrid.

The 40-year-old is no stranger to the Bundesliga. After stints at Real Sociedad, Liverpool and Real Madrid, he ended his successful career as a player at FC Bayern from 2014 to 2017.

In 2021, the rumor persisted for a long time that Leverkusen’s neighbors on the Rhine, Borussia Mönchengladbach, were flirting with an Alonso commitment. At that time, however, the former midfield strategist finally extended his contract in the Basque Country.
