Maria KeaneRoland Sallai was absent from SC Freiburg’s 1-0 home defeat by RB Leipzig on Saturday. Coach Christian Streich justified his decision with a “pause for thought. A pause to think.”
The 57-year-old didn’t want to explain the alleged misconduct of his right offensive player: “The word says it all. We regulate everything else internally.”
It was the first time this season that the Hungarian was absent from the squad despite not being injured.
There was already confusion about Sallai at the end of March. Streich had explained: “His father rumored that he hadn’t played in the last few games because there had been an offer from Lazio Rome, and that’s why Roland wouldn’t play.”
In this case, the coach had defended his player: “Roland is completely left out in this story, poor guy. It’s brutally difficult for him. Statements like that totally damage him, such weird stuff.”
