FC Schalke 04 needs a new coach.

FC Schalke 04 fired coach Frank Kramer on Wednesday. The most important information about the background and the trainer candidates around Thomas Reis can be found here.

FC Schalke 04: Why was Frank Kramer fired?

FC Schalke 04 parted ways with coach Frank Kramer on Wednesday, one day after the 5-1 debacle in the second round of the DFB Cup at TSG Hoffenheim. The reason is obvious: the sporting misery.

“After the promotion, we all committed ourselves to one goal: staying up in the Bundesliga. Until the very end, we were convinced that we could turn the tide in the existing constellation. From our point of view, the time has now come for us to make personnel changes have to do,” said Schalke’s sporting director Rouven Schröder.

Board member Peter Knäbel added: “The way we behaved, especially in the away games in Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, was not worthy of FC Schalke 04. That’s why our analysis goes beyond the head coach as an individual have to improve significantly in all areas in order to be able to achieve our big goal – staying up in the league.”

Kramer took up the post at Schalke on July 1, 2022. The Royal Blues had previously been promoted to the Bundesliga under interim coach Mike Büskens after Dimitrios Grammozis was sacked in March.

Things were bumpy from the start under Kramer’s leadership. Schalke have only won two of their 12 competitive games this season: in the first round of the cup at fourth division side Bremer SV (5-0) and in the league in a 3-1 win against VfL Bochum on matchday 6. In the remaining nine games, the Knappen suffered six defeats with three draws, including heavy clap like the 1:6 against Union on the 4th matchday.

Schalke recently lost four times in a row in the Bundesliga. With six points, S04 occupies the penultimate place in the table. After all, the saving shore is still in sight. VfB Stuttgart, Hertha BSC and Bayer Leverkusen all have just two more points.

FC Schalke 04: What’s next?

On Wednesday, training at Schalke will be led by Mike Büskens’ assistant coaches. It is currently completely unclear when those responsible will present a successor, or whether perhaps even the eternal Schalke Büskens will step in for the fourth time.

Apparently it is conceivable that Büskens & Co. will look after the Schalke professionals at least for the game on Sunday at Hertha BSC. A week later, the home game against SC Freiburg is on the agenda.

The financial situation does not make it easier to commit a successor. With Grammozis (until the end of the season) and Kramer (contract until 2024), there are currently two coaches on the Schalke payroll anyway.

FC Schalke 04: Who are the coach candidates?

Thomas Reis has been traded as the hottest candidate for weeks. The 49-year-old was released at VfL Bochum in September and is a report by the picture according to the task in Gelsenkirchen open to.

However, the reports WAZthat there are also doubts about rice at Schalke. This is one of the reasons why those responsible have stuck with Kramer for so long. There is currently no other serious coach candidate, although the name Adi Hütter (most recently Borussia Mönchengladbach) has also been traded.

Reis is currently still under contract in Bochum. However, VfL would not tend to ask for a fee. The reason: If Reis were to sign with S04, Bochum would have the coach off the payroll.

Rice was already an issue at Schalke in the summer. Supposedly, the miners were even willing to transfer a fee of up to one million euros for the football coach to Bochum in May. That reported the sports picture.

Reis would have liked to go to Schalke, but was not given the go-ahead from VfL. When the rumors became public, it caused upsets in Bochum. Reis started the season with VfL with six bankruptcies from six games and had to leave as head coach after three successful years.
