Schalke 04 is apparently about to clarify the coaching question. The test is “on its last legs,” said sports director Peter Knäbel on Sunday Picture TV: “It won’t be long before we have a decision.” He assumes that the new head coach will be presented in the coming week.

The economically badly hit climber parted ways with Frank Kramer on Wednesday after five competitive defeats in a row. Assistant coach Matthias Kreutzer is in charge of the Royal Blues on an interim basis.

Schalke is “prepared” for further relegation, but the club “definitely wants to prevent this scenario”, for example through player transfers. “We will definitely upgrade,” explained Knäbel.

In any case, as the season progresses, players from the Knappenschmiede will also “give the chance” to assert themselves among the pros. Only on Friday did Schalke sign the clubless Frenchman Timothee Kolodziejczak until the end of the season, in response to the injury problems in the defence.

Knäbel did not rule out accepting financial help from former club boss Clemens Tönnies. “It’s not like we’re basically closing ourselves off. Contact with him is still good,” he explained: “But the board will decide whether we’ll talk to him.”
