Simon Rolfes succeeds Rudi Völler as sports director

Sports director Simon Rolfes will succeed Rudi Völler as sports director at Bayer Leverkusen from July 2022. The factory club announced on Friday.

Völler had already announced at the end of March that it would no longer extend his expiring contract. The 61-year-old will then be a member of the shareholders’ committee and also represent the club as an ambassador in public, announced the Rhinelander.

Rolfes, who took over the post of sports director three years ago, is moving to the side of Fernando Carro, the chairman of the management board. “I would like to thank you for the trust you have placed in me. It is an honor for me to be able to take on even more responsibility for this club, to which I owe so much,” said Rolfes: “We have big plans. I would also like to thank you Rudi Völler, from whom I was able to learn a lot that is important for the craft of a good football manager. “

Völler acted as sports director at Bayer from January 2005 to June 2018, after which the 1990 world champion took over the newly created position of sports director.

Völler is looking forward to the new task. “I have a close, trusting relationship with Fernando Carro and Simon Rolfes at the helm of the club. You, all of you at Bayer 04 and of course the Werkself fans, can rely on us to represent our common interests in the Shareholders’ Committee and in the exercise of them I will expressly represent my new representative tasks at home and abroad, “said Völler.
