"The desired development has not materialized"

Bundesliga club RB Leipzig have reacted to the disappointing season so far and dismissed coach Jesse Marsch. The runner-up announced on Sunday, two days after the bitter 1: 2 (1: 1) bankruptcy at Union Berlin.

Marsch (48) was absent from Berlin, as was his assistant coach Achim Beierlorzer, due to a corona quarantine. The coach in charge was the second assistant, Marco Kurth.

Beierlorzer will prepare the team for the upcoming home game in the Champions League on Tuesday (6.45 p.m.) against Manchester City and sit on the bench during the game. RB announced that a successor solution for Marsch should be presented soon.

“The separation from Jesse Marsch was not easy for us, because I really appreciate Jesse as a person and a coach. It is a shame that it did not work out as hoped in this constellation and that this step has now become necessary because unfortunately the desired development and thus also the necessary results for our season goals have failed to materialize, “said club boss Oliver Mintzlaff in a press release.

The third Bundesliga defeat in a row as well as missing the knockout round in the Champions League were the American’s undoing.

Marsch’s hope for stability is not fulfilled

“Up until the very end I had the hope that after a restless start to the season and changeable performances as a group we would find more cohesion and stability and turn the proverbial course around. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to do that,” emphasized the dismissed head coach.

Marsch only took over the office last summer from Julian Nagelsmann (to Bayern Munich). As a former coach of sister club Red Bull Salzburg, he wanted to move away from possession of the ball to the typical RB pressing football.

But a clear concept could not be seen on the pitch, and Marsch found no solutions to the enormous fluctuations in performance of the heavily occupied squad.
