Magath wants to join forces: “Everyone has to participate”

The new coach Felix Magath wants to join forces to prevent Hertha BSC from being relegated from the Bundesliga. “It’s not about Felix Magath or Fredi Bobic or anyone else. It’s about keeping Hertha BSC in the league,” said the successor to Tayfun Korkut, who was released on Sunday, at his performance on Monday in Berlin: “Everyone has to participate.”

The 68-year-old Magath (“Actually, I no longer wanted to work as a coach in the Bundesliga”) would like to take “at least one point” in the upcoming league game of the penultimate table on Saturday against TSG Hoffenheim (3:30 p.m. / Sky). He is convinced: “With this squad we will hold the class.”

Sport managing director Fredi Bobic openly admitted that Magath should live up to his reputation as a “tough dog”. “We have to reset everything. That’s why we need a coach with a lot of experience and a strong personality,” said the 1996 European champion: “We need a coach who demands discipline and who is known for a clear and hard hand when dealing with the players knows.”

Magath is returning to the Bundesliga after a good nine years as a coach. Until Christmas 2012 he looked after VfL Wolfsburg, which he had led to the championship in 2009. After the Würzburger Kickers were relegated to the second division, Magath ended his engagement as Global Sports Director at main sponsor Flyeralarm in May of last year.

After the recent defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach (0:2), Hertha parted ways with Korkut, who only took over as coach in November. The Berliners have recently suffered five Bundesliga defeats in a row and have been without a win for ten competitive games.

Felix Magath on a possible extension of the commitment: “We didn’t talk about that. I’m not interested in it at all at the moment.”

Felix Magath on the expected number of points: “One of my strengths is being able to focus. I’m not interested in what’s happening on May 14 at the moment. At the moment I’m just focusing on the game against Hoffenheim at the weekend. Hopefully we’ll have to score points there. That will be difficult enough , so the focus is only on this game for now.”

Felix Magath on the biggest construction sites: “That’s a good question, but unfortunately I can’t answer it. I first have to develop a feeling for the people, I have to speak, feel and smell them in order to be able to recognize that. Fredi Bobic on Felix Magath’s perception: “Our paths have crossed again and again, we’ve known each other for a long time. I’ve always seen him differently and I think there’s still virtue in football. Even the younger generation sometimes needs to be reminded of discipline and work. Felix Magath on the decision-making: “My wife and children pushed me to go to Berlin, so the decision was easy for me. I will spend the coming weeks in the hotel. I’ve also been doing this practically my whole life.”

Felix Magath on initial measures: “My first levers are that I have to sensitize everyone in and around the club to the fact that everyone has to participate in the work against relegation. Everyone should focus on that, in the last eight games, focus on the capital club too remains in the main Bundesliga.”

Felix Magath when asked what drives him: “I didn’t really want to work as a coach in the Bundesliga anymore. But: I’ve done nothing but football my whole life, so I can’t do anything else.
