SPD health politician Karl Lauterbach reacted to the corona infection of midfielder Joshua Kimmich from FC Bayern Munich.

“It’s a shame that Joshua Kimmich got infected, I wish you a quick full recovery,” tweeted the 58-year-old.

The case shows that it is difficult to avoid infection with COVID-19 without vaccination. Lauterbach added: “In the group of the unvaccinated, the incidence is well over 1,000. The risk is uncontrollable.”

Kimmich had caused heated discussions in recent weeks because he was not vaccinated against the virus. On Wednesday, FC Bayern announced that the 26-year-old had tested positive for the corona virus. “The FC Bayern midfielder is doing well,” the club wrote in a statement.

Shortly before the report to Kimmich, there were signs that he was about to be vaccinated. “I think that Jo is going in the direction of getting vaccinated,” said national coach Hansi Flick on Wednesday afternoon: “In the future, I think there will be no other way.”

FC Bayern: Kimmich probably missed the top game against BVB

Unlike Kimmich, at least Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry had themselves vaccinated against the virus during the week, which reduced the number of unvaccinated people in the FCB squad from five to three.

Kimmich has to remain in domestic isolation for 14 days from the time of the positive test, but can test himself free with a negative PCR test.

In all likelihood he will miss the Bundesliga top game against Borussia Dortmund on December 4th.
