Uli Hoeneß explains the 'attack department'

FC Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß has declared the ‘attack department’ and talked about legendary appearances on TV.

“If I attacked, it was 98 percent to protect FC Bayern. To this day, I call journalists and abuse them,” said Hoeneß in the OMR-Podcast. The aim of the former FCB president was to protect the Munich employees from unjustified criticism.

“If I have the feeling that FC Bayern – or parts of the club, players, coaches and board members – are being treated unfairly, then you have to say something,” said Hoeneß.

According to his own statements, after the 3-1 win over RB Leipzig, he also called Lothar Matthäus after he had questioned FCB. “What kind of nonsense did you say that FC Bayern is broadly the worst-positioned club in the Bundesliga – among the top clubs?” Hoeneß described his conversation with the German national record player. He had “few arguments” on this.

Only sometimes, when the club was too boring, did he deliberately provoke. “When we played against Werden Bremen, I really enjoyed fighting with Willi Lemke. That something was going on,” said Hoeneß.

Hoeneß occasionally let out his anger at legendary TV appearances, like that Sport1-Double pass. “I see that quite regularly. There is so much steam chatting and it never really gets down to business. You have to say something,” he explained.

These spontaneous appearances are always associated with little effort for Hoeneß. “I have the number of an editor, whom I then call. He passes it on, then everything is thrown away and Hoeneß comes on the show,” said Hoeneß.
