Werder Bremen distance themselves from ex-keeper Tim Wiese

Werder Bremen has temporarily distanced itself from its long-time goalkeeper Tim Wiese “because of his repeated public dealings with well-known people from the right-wing milieu”. As the North Germans announced, the 40-year-old national keeper will no longer receive invitations to official club events for the time being, and Wiese will no longer play for the traditional Werder team.

“We had an open, but also very serious conversation with Tim at the beginning of the year and made it unmistakably clear to him that this approach would not fit with the values of SV Werder Bremen,” said Werder President Hubertus Hess-Grunewald in the message quoted: “Despite his statements, we have doubts that Tim doesn’t feel like he belongs to these circles. But there shouldn’t be any doubts about our attitude, which we represent at Werder Bremen. We see Tim Wiese as responsible to the fans and to Werder Bremen to dispel these doubts in the long term.”

At the weekend, photos of the former goalkeeper appeared again on social media, which, according to SV Werder, “suggest contacts in the right-wing scene”. Some fans had recently positioned themselves clearly against the long-time professional with banners in the stadium.

Those responsible had already informed Wiese about the steps in a conversation, the club said. Wiese had recently denied any contacts with the right-wing scene to the Deichstube.
