Why Kevin de Bruyne never ended up in Dortmund

ManCity star Kevin De Bruyne did an interview with the Dutch daily Het Nieuwsblad reveal that he was about to move to Borussia Dortmund a few years ago – but the Blues vetoed it.

“Chelsea really wanted to keep me and give me a chance,” said the 30-year-old. “But I actually wanted to go to Dortmund.” Allegedly, everything was already clear before then head coach Jose Mourinho rejected the deal at the last second.

“Mourinho then said no,” said the Belgian at the time Sports picture. Rumor has it that Mourinho was angry because Dortmund refused to give up striker Robert Lewandowski to the Blues. “My agent told me that too. But that’s professional football. Wherever a lot of money is spent, there is also a lot of politics,” said De Bruyne.

Return to the Bundesliga in Wolfsburg

The fact that De Bruyne, who previously played for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, wanted to leave London at all, had a very specific reason. According to De Bruyne, a game in the Carabao Cup in September 2013 against Swindon was the decisive factor in his request for a change. “I hadn’t played for a month and then you had to play against a League 2 club. Then it was over.”

De Bruyne was actually allowed to leave Chelsea in 2014 and return to the Bundesliga. Not to Dortmund, however, but to VfL Wolfsburg. A year and a half later, his $ 76 million transfer to Manchester City followed.
