Brighton & Hove Albion's Enock Mwepu retires aged 24 due to heart disease

Midfielder Enock Mwepu of English Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion has had to retire from football at the age of 24 because of heart problems. The club announced on Monday that the Zambia international had been diagnosed with a “hereditary heart disease”. A continuation of the career would lead to an “extremely high risk”.

Mwepu had been unwell on a flight to the national team a month ago and spent a few days in a hospital in Mali before flying to England for further checks.

Mwepu, who has scored three goals in 27 games for the club, wrote on Twitter that he was “living his dream of the Premier League”.

Mwepu moved from RB Salzburg to Brighton in 2021.
