Liverpool FC announce the departure of sporting director Michael Edwards

Liverpool FC has to cope with the departure of sporting director Michael Edwards at the end of the season. As the club announced, the contract will not be extended at the 42-year-old’s request. Edwards was considered one of the closest confidants of team manager Jürgen Klopp.

“I’ve had my last summer transfer window as Liverpool’s sporting director,” wrote Edwards in a letter on the club’s website. “I’ve always planned to keep my time at the club at ten years or less. I loved working here, but I believe in change. I think it’s good for someone.” He has held his office since 2016, having previously worked as a chief analyst from 2011.

According to media reports, Edward’s future lies with Real Madrid – both sides are said to be interested in working together. Recently there had also been speculation that RB Leipzig was advertising for Edwards. However, RB CEO Oliver Mintzlaff had clearly denied such rumors.

The still sports director, who played a leading role in the transfers of Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alisson and thus laid the foundation for winning the Champions League (2019) and Premier League (2020), will be assisted by his assistant and Credit Management Director Julian Ward replaced. The club thanked Edwards for his achievements and gave him a “decisive role” for what had been achieved.

Klopp raves about Edwards: “Was a constant”

Jürgen Klopp said: “He was a constant during my time at LFC, his contribution to our success is clear to everyone. I wish Michael and his family all the best in everything they do next. I know that he will not immediately or in a rush. So we still have some time to work together. “

In the rest of the months together, Klopp “maybe wants to create even more special memories for our club”. He has “worked closely” with Edwards, but there are “so many brilliant people in the club who all contribute to what we have achieved”.
