Maria KeaneLiverpool FC will have to do without defender Virgil van Dijk for several weeks. This was confirmed by coach Jürgen Klopp. The 31-year-old suffered a hamstring injury in Monday’s away defeat at Brentford FC.
“He will be out for a few weeks,” said Klopp. “It’s nothing short-term, but I’ve also had long-term injuries as a coach.”
Van Dijk, who was named European Footballer of the Year in 2019, had to be substituted at half-time in the game at Brentford when the score was 2-0. After his return from the World Cup, where Elftal had made it to the quarter-finals, it was the Dutchman’s third game within a week.
Without van Dijk, landmark games lie ahead for Liverpool in the coming weeks. The Reds host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup on Sunday, followed by Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea in the Premier League. Liverpool are currently in sixth place in the table, seven points short of the Champions League places.
