Mauricio Pochettino top candidate to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Mauricio Pochettino is, according to information from SPOX and GOAL the top candidate to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjer, who was sacked on Sunday, as Manchester United coach. Pochettino, currently head coach at Paris Saint-Germain, is also fundamentally interested in the job at Old Trafford.

The 49-year-old would be open if the English made him and PSG an offer. According to information from SPOX and GOAL, Pochettino also has a good relationship with United’s coaching legend Sir Alex Ferguson, who could also make a commitment to the Red Devils palatable for him.

Pochettino’s relationship with PSG sports director Leonardo, on the other hand, is considered tense. Therefore, the Argentine, whose contract in Paris runs until 2023, is said to have the desire to work for a club where he has more decision-making power.

Manchester United already had Pochettino in their sights in 2018/19

United had Pochettino already in their sights when Jose Mourinho was sacked in late 2018. Solskjaer initially took over as an interim trainer; an external long-term solution was actually being considered for the summer of 2019. However, since Solskjaer proved himself well, the Norwegian stayed in office for a long time.

Now United is also initially planning an interim solution. For the time being, the previous assistant coach Michael Carrick will take over, and a transition coach will temporarily be in charge until the summer of 2022. The big solution, which would also be Pochettino, should then start for the 2022/23 season.

In addition to Pochettino, former PSG coach Laurent Blanc and Zinedine Zidane were among the debates in the first hours after Solskjaer’s dismissal. The latter is probably not particularly keen on a job at United.

In addition, Ajax coach Erik ten Hag was named as a candidate, the Dutchman lolled in on Sunday evening ESPN however, for the time being: “I haven’t heard anything about it, so I don’t think about it either,” said ten Hag.
