Premier League: Villa-Burnley also canceled due to Corona

The English Premier League program has been further thinned out. In the early Saturday afternoon, the match between Aston Villa and Burnley FC, which was supposed to kick off at 4 p.m. CET, was also canceled due to a corona outbreak in the hosts’ team.

The appearance of Arsenal FC at Leeds United was the only match of the day, the Gunners prevailed 4-1 (3-0). Since the suspension of the former Dortmund player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal has continued to be in strong form and consolidated fourth place in the table.

Aubameyang was kicked out of the team last weekend because of a disciplinary violation, had to give up the captain’s armband and has not been in the squad since. Arsenal won all three games without the Gabonese, while Gabriel Martinelli (16./28.), Bukayo Saka (42.) and Emile Smith Rowe (84.) scored for the Londoners in Leeds.

On Sunday, the matches between Newcastle United and Manchester City, between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea and between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are to be played. On the 18th matchday alone, at least six of the ten games will be canceled.

Aston Villa, the club from Birmingham, could not muster enough players, so the league decided to cancel the game. The Premier League clubs will hold a meeting on Monday to discuss the current crisis. Due to the new Omicron variant, the coronavirus has been spreading rapidly in Great Britain in the last few days.
