Roy Keane tells an anecdote to swap shirts with Matthias Sammer

Irish soccer legend Roy Keane (50) said that former German international Matthias Sammer turned down the only request for a jersey swap in his career.

“I asked a player to change his shirt. I regret it. It was when I played with Ireland against Germany before the 1994 World Cup,” Keane told his former Manchester United team-mate Gary in the YouTube format “The Overlap” Neville. “It was Libero Sammer. He said: ‘No’ and I said: ‘F ***’. ‘”

Keanes Ireland won the friendly 2-0. At the subsequent World Cup in the USA, his team failed in the round of 16 against the Netherlands. With Manchester United, Keane won the Premier League seven times and the Champions League in the 1999 final against Bayern Munich.

In 2006 he ended his career without a single jersey swap. He would have loved to get hold of the shirt of the former French director Zinedine Zidane. Once he was close. “We walked through the tunnel after a game in Madrid. He looked at me and I thought he was going to ask about my shirt,” said Keane. But Zidane didn’t do that.
