Title candidate RB Leipzig will play on the first day of the Bundesliga on Sunday, August 15, away from FSV Mainz 05. The kick-off will take place at 3:30 pm in the Mewa Arena in Mainz. 16,500 spectators were admitted to the game. Anyone who goes to the stadium must either be vaccinated, tested or recovered.
It was long in the stars whether the game could take place at all. Eleven professionals from Rheinhessen were sent into domestic isolation by the responsible health department last Wednesday. After a positive corona test with attacker Karim Onisiwo, the virus was detected in two other players on Monday and Tuesday. A follow-up test on Wednesday also gave a positive result for a member of the coaching team. No other positive cases occurred during the tests on Thursday. Mainz trained again on Friday – the game can take place.
At Mainz 05, except for the free transferable Robin Quaison and Philipp Mwene, all top performers have been retained so far. With Silvan Widmer, Jae-Sung Lee and Anton Stach, Mainz has strengthened itself cheaply and sensibly.
RB Leipzig had to accept two painful departures in defense with Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich) and Ibrahima Konate (Liverpool FC), the newcomers Josko Gvardiol (Dinamo Zagreb) and Mohamed Simakan (RC Strasbourg) should replace them. In the attack, new signing Andre Silva (Eintracht Frankfurt) should provide goals
