Spahn advocates the 2G rule for professional footballers

The acting Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn has spoken out in favor of a 2G regulation for professional footballers. He thinks it is “absolutely right that whoever appears at work, whether in a restaurant or on the football field, should be vaccinated just as the others,” said the CDU politician in Berlin on Monday. In addition, there is “perhaps a special role model function, especially in professional football”.

Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and North Rhine-Westphalia’s regional chief Hendrik Wüst (CDU) had, among other things, discussed a 2G rule in professional football after the federal-state consultations on Thursday.

With a strict application, only vaccinated and recovered people should be used, unvaccinated professionals such as national player Joshua Kimmich would then be condemned to watch.

“That’s basically the topic of 2G. It’s not about whether the individual footballer is vaccinated when he is at home,” said Spahn. The question is: “Is it actually right that everyone in the stadium is vaccinated, except maybe not those on the pitch?”

According to the German Football League (DFL), the vaccination rate in the Bundesliga and second division is more than 90 percent. In the past few days there has been a great lack of understanding in parts of the league about the advance from politics.
