Third game, third victory: VfL Wolfsburg’s soaring under coach Mark van Bommel continues. The wolves defeated runners-up RB Leipzig deservedly 1-0 (0-0) in the top game and remain the measure of all things in the Bundesliga.

Jerome Roussillon (52nd) scored for Wolfsburg, who are the only team in German professional football with a white vest. Nine points from the first three games also mean a start record for VfL in the Bundesliga.

Under coach Jesse Marsch, Leipzig suffered their second defeat of the still young season after the 0: 1 at the start at FSV Mainz 05. Across the seasons, it was even the fifth away defeat in a row.

From Leipzig’s point of view, the game was accompanied by the Wechsel-Theater around Marcel Sabitzer. The fact that the RB captain – officially due to adductor problems – was not part of the squad for a short time was seen by observers as a further sign of the imminent move to FC Bayern.

Leipzig’s coach Marsch left the Sabitzer question open on Sunday evening. “I know there is a lot of speculation about the situation with Sabi. I can honestly say he is injured, so he is not there. Let’s see what happens in the next few days. We talked a lot about this topic,” said Marsch at DAZN before kick-off.

Wolfsburg newcomer Waldschmidt is missing injured

The 12,058 spectators in Wolfsburg experienced an entertaining game between the two Champions League starters with intense duels and a lot of speed – but initially without the big goal area scenes.

Wolfsburg, whose new signing Luca Waldschmidt had to postpone his debut due to a head injury, dominated in the initial phase with a lot of possession, Leipzig improved with increasing playing time and came to some conclusions before the break.

The biggest chance of the first half was missed by RB striker Andre Silva. Curious: VfL goalkeeper Koen Casteels parried his header from four meters after a free-kick flank with a spectacular head, and Mohamed Simakan put the margin over the goal. On the other hand, Ridle Baku flicked the ball from the corner of the penalty area towards the goal after a brief corner – but Peter Gulacsi scratched it out of the corner with his fingertips.

Weghorst misses the chance to make it 2-0

In the second section, the home side took over the command again – and were promptly rewarded. Because RB keeper Gulacsi defended a low cross from Renato Steffen forward, Roussillon had no trouble pushing the ball over the line from a central position.

Leipzig now risked more and pressed the equalizer, but Wolfsburg initially remained dangerous. Wout Weghorst missed the greatest chance for the preliminary decision on a counterattack (58th) when he ran up to Gulacsi alone – but shot the ball well over the box.
