Erling Haaland’s frustrating experiences with FC Bayern: The machine that pays apprenticeship

Two goal giants among themselves: Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland.

After a long break from injury, Erling Haaland is ready to start on time for the top Bundesliga game against FC Bayern (Saturday, 6.30 p.m.). The previous experiences of the BVB goalscorer with the record champions have been anything but rosy.

Haaland scored four goals in five competitive games against Munich and prepared another. However, each of these “classics” was lost for Borussia Dortmund. And: In his last meeting with the industry leader, the Norwegian definitely paid a hard time.

SPOX and GOAL look back on Haaland’s previous experiences in Bavaria.

The premiere of Haaland, who came from Salzburg in January 2020, against Bayern was particularly sobering. Joshua Kimmich’s artful lifter in the 43rd minute not only sealed the victory for the guests, it also ensured the preliminary decision in the fight for the championship.

Bitter: In the 58th minute, BVB combined into the Bayern penalty area, where Haaland lurked and brought the ball towards the goal, but Jerome Boateng threw himself into the shot and maneuvered the ball with his elbow decisively past Manuel Neuer.

On the one hand, Boateng did not have a clear intention – on the other hand, Haaland’s shot would probably have gone into the goal without contact with Boateng’s arm. The decision: no penalty for Dortmund. To make matters worse, Haaland had to be replaced 20 minutes before the end.

Supercup in Munich – in front of empty stands. Dortmund got into the game well, but conceded two goals by Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Müller (18th, 32nd) within fifteen minutes.

Then came the appearance of Erling Haaland: First the attacker prepared the connection goal by Julian Brandt (39th), then he scored to equalize (55th).

Shortly afterwards, the Dortmund goalgetter could even have made it 3-2 for BVB, but he failed in a one-on-one with Neuer. On the other hand, Kimmich did better shortly before the end (82nd), Bayern retained the upper hand – once again.

Another classic to forget from Dortmund’s point of view. Marco Reus scored the opening goal for BVB at a supposedly psychologically important point (45th), but David Alaba equalized with a free kick (45th + 4) before the break whistle.

After the break, Robert Lewandowski turned the game around with a header (48th) and Leroy Sane with a placed shot in the lower left corner (80th) in favor of the guests.

The mostly inconspicuous Haaland gives the Dortmunders hope again (83rd), by turning Bayern’s keeper Neuer after a pass from Raphael Guerreiro and safely pushing in to make it 2: 3. In the end it stayed that way.

Haaland’s big appearance in the Allianz Arena. “How good is the Haaland ?! It’s a machine, dude! Tomorrow I’ll call the advisor,” said Bayern’s sports director Hasan Salihamidzic in amazement after the Norwegian had scored a double for BVB within the first nine minutes.

From Haaland’s point of view, the scene that can be seen in the Amazon documentary “FC Bayern – Behind the Legend” was again followed by great disenchantment. The Munich struck back with four goals. Lewandowski countered with a three-pack (26th, 44th, 90th), and Leon Goretzka (88th) met.

Haaland himself experienced the last half hour from the bench, angry because of an injury. As in most of the “classics” before, the defeat was more due to Dortmund’s shaky defense than to him.

Another Supercup duel with Bayern, another defeat – and this time Haaland didn’t succeed. He struggled, created a few chances for his colleagues, but hardly developed against a robust, tailored FCB defense around Niklas Süle and Dayot Upamecano and also paid the hardship.

Upamecano alone asserted himself in nine out of twelve direct duels with him. A frustrating result for the ambitious Haaland, who was gesticulating wildly during the game, kicking the ground or shaking his head when he or his teammates failed.

On the other hand, Haaland’s opponent Lewandowski once again had a creamy day. The Pole scored twice at his old place of work in front of 25,000 spectators (41st, 74th), and Thomas Müller also scored by stabbing (49th). Reus scored the interim goal for BVB (64th), but in the end it was clearly too little for black and yellow.

Will Haaland and Co. do better on Saturday? The last BVB win against Bayern was more than two years ago – back then, on August 3, 2019, Borussia won 2-0 in the Supercup.
